Radiation-hardened chips

The investable opportunity in space radiation-hardened silicon is not the fab or the high-assurance incumbents but fabless RHBD IP, rad-tolerant SoCs, and qualification tooling built on commercial foundry nodes (FD-SOI / FinFET).

The callCheap launch lets satellites fly rad-tolerant commercial parts, but the biggest constellations build their own chips and the merchant slice is tiny.

Fig. 1The balance. Drivers and catalysts against restraints, each block sized by its weight; catalysts hang dashed because they have not happened yet, sized by their odds. It tips toward the restraints.
  1. D1Launch cost has fallen about 45x in two decades, so satellites are cheap and replaceable and can fly rad-tolerant commercial parts instead of exotic rad-hard ones.
  2. D2Radiation tolerance can now be designed into chips on commercial FD-SOI and FinFET processes, which legacy parts years behind on performance cannot match for on-board AI.
  3. R1The largest volume bypasses merchants: Starlink flies screened commercial parts and Kuiper built its own Prometheus chip, so value goes to the foundry and the primes.
  4. R2The reachable slice is $50-150M today, maybe $300-500M by 2030 in the bull case, so a leading company is a $30-90M revenue acquisition.
  5. C1GlobalFoundries markets a rad-tolerant 22FDX design kit any fabless company can use, beyond the BAE-owned RH12 flow, opening merchant rad-tolerant silicon to startups.end-2028

$5M raised by 1 company, $15M of it in the last three years. Early: Little money in so far; a lead investor would set the pace.
