Photonic PDK and EDA
The asset-light way to play the photonic-foundry-capacity crunch is the PDK/EDA/design-automation layer every foundry and fabless team needs, where the moat is design IP and process-design-kit lock-in, not a 300mm fab

The callA foundry-neutral photonic design layer is the one piece Synopsys won't build, but the whole market is $500M and the exits have been small.
- D1Optics moves inside the AI datacentre, so photonic chip designs go from hundreds a year to thousands, each needing a kit and a flow.
- D2Every foundry has its own kit, kits for new processes often don't exist, and the electronic tools model ideal devices, not the defects that decide photonic yield.
- R1Synopsys's single-vendor flow, OptoCompiler plus Lumerical, can swallow the workflow before a neutral hub reaches scale.
- R2The exits are small: Lumerical went for $107.5M and Luceda for an undisclosed price, with only about 3.5 natural buyers.
- C1Two photonic design-kit licensors disclose per-die royalties on over 5M co-packaged optics engines a year, turning the hub into a royalty line.2032

- 28 Jul 2026The asset-light PDK bet in photonics is really two bets wearing one name: a licensed-PDK play that only fires if the industry standardises (the opposite of where the evidence points), and a PDK-management tooling play that thrives on the mess staying messy. Small, but real.
- 21 Jul 2026Two companies independently name the same gap in photonic design tools: they do not model manufacturing defects, so a design that simulates cleanly comes back from the factory unbuildable. Closing it means collecting statistics at a scale that would take a year per wafer on standard equipment, which is itself the barrier.
- 11 Jul 2026A correction from the field: the company I cited as executing the asset-light process/design-kit play turns out to monetise as a product company with a captive process, no PDK on offer. The actual PDK licensor in heterogeneous integration spent 3 years majority-owned by the EDA incumbent before spinning back out. The neutral version of this layer keeps being either absorbed or bypassed by its best potential occupants.

- 17 Jun 2026The capital-efficient way to play the photonics build-out is the integration PROCESS / design-kit that runs on existing foundry wafers, not a new fab — a real company is now executing exactly this, at ~1/4 the cost of the vertically-integrated incumbents.
