Metasurface flat optics (platform)

- $920M by 2035
The callMetasurfaces ship, and the profit goes to the foundries and module makers that license or buy them; the exception would be an infrared company selling the whole system.
- D1Phones, AR glasses, cars and robots fill up with cameras and optical sensors that must get thinner, cheaper and read more than colour.
- D2A flat wafer-patterned layer replaces a multi-element stack at wafer-level cost and adds polarisation, spectrum and beam steering with no moving parts.
- R1No metasurface company has reached scale on its own: Metalenz licenses to ST, which keeps the value, and another independent sold to Radiant for about €285-300M.
- R2The metasurface is about 5 people in a 50-to-100-person system, so integrators capture it, and a MEMS plate does the function cheaper on 8-inch glass.
- R3None of the independent companies in view has the stage, team, terms, market or geography to scale.
- C1A tier-1 smartphone maker shipping a visible-band metalens camera module, opening the imaging segment to suppliers other than ST.end-2028

What changedthe record, newest first
- 4 Aug 2026A programmable lens does not have to be a metasurface. The company shipping active optical correction into real camera-module evaluations today does it with a MEMS plate on standard 8-inch glass wafers — a mature process, which is exactly the thing the flat-optics route keeps failing to be. It also tells you, on its own slide, that it plans to sell the part and license the rest. Both halves point the same way: the interesting question in programmable optics is who owns the unit, not who patterns the surface.
- 8 Jul 2026A metasurface is five people of a hundred-person product. That single fact decides who keeps the money: license it away as a component, or build the whole system around it as the core. The only companies that capture value do the latter — and only where the physics lets them (infrared today, the human eye not before the 2030s).
