MEMS sensing and actuation

MEMS sensing & actuation is a real and growing market (>$19B by 2030) but a foundry-scale, cost-per-unit, qualification-driven business where the durable value is held by the Bosch/ST/TDK/Infineon oligopoly; no European MEMS startup reaches venture scale independently this decade, the…

The callMEMS is big and mature and Bosch, ST, TDK and Infineon hold the sockets on fab cost and qualification; the only opening is a transducer class they cannot make in their fabs.

Fig. 1The balance. Drivers and catalysts against restraints, each block sized by its weight; catalysts hang dashed because they have not happened yet, sized by their odds. It tips toward the restraints.
  1. D1Glasses, earbuds, rings and robots have to hear, speak, sense and move in a few millimetres on a tiny battery, which phone-era MEMS were not built for.
  2. D2Wafer-level solid-state transducers, MEMS speakers, ultrasound and micromagnets, need a new process the incumbent fabs do not run.
  3. R1No independent European MEMS company has reached $1B without a trade sale; qualification keeps customers with incumbents a generation at a time.
  4. R2Prices deflate year on year and a MEMS fab plus automotive or medical qualification is a capital bar the incumbents already paid.
  5. R3Syntiant buying Knowles' consumer MEMS at 0.6x revenue is the commoditisation floor for the acoustic slice.
  6. C1A flagship AI-glasses or earbud line shipping a solid-state MEMS speaker at over 10M units, opening a transducer socket incumbents cannot copy.end-2027

  • 12 Aug 2026Most micro-electromechanical companies I meet are selling an instrument or a component, which is why I have struggled to believe the category produces a venture-scale winner rather than a supplier the incumbents eventually buy cheaply. The one I saw this week is shaped the other way round: the real asset is a manufacturing process for a material nobody currently makes at chip scale, and the product it launches with is just the first application of it. They already sell the material to an unrelated industry. The caveat is large - the headline product exists only in simulation and needs a manufacturing partner they have not found - but the shape is the one worth looking for.
