Structured micro-optics

Two European component layers share one claim: the value in an optical element is moving out of assembled, polished glass and into a manufactured microstructure, replicated at wafer scale or written directly onto a substrate.

The callGlasses and sensors need flat optics in the millions, and Europe holds the process base, but the slice a startup can win is about $140M against a €1B exit need.

Fig. 1The balance. Drivers and catalysts against restraints, each block sized by its weight; catalysts hang dashed because they have not happened yet, sized by their odds. It tips toward the restraints.
  1. D1Cameras and displays go into everything worn or moving, with smart glasses at 27.3M units by 2030, and they need optics that are flat, light and made in the millions.
  2. D2Europe holds the replication and direct-write process base, so many of the new companies start there.
  3. R1The slice a newcomer can win is about $140M against the roughly €1B exit a venture-scale outcome needs, and no sizing argument closes the gap.
  4. R2Wafer-level volume is Asian and captive to Largan, Himax, AMS-Osram and LG Innotek, and diffractive beam shaping has four established suppliers.
  5. R3The process base at Fraunhofer IOF is mature rather than new, and wafer-level optics has grown at high single digits for a decade.
