Trailing-edge capacity
Chinese mature-node (>=28nm) capacity additions in analog, power, RF and automotive silicon are building a structural OVERSUPPLY that compresses margins for the Western broad-line IDMs (Infineon, STMicroelectronics, NXP, onsemi) through the late-2020s, even as AI-exposed leading-edge parts stay in acute…

The callChinese mature-node capacity should reset wafer prices, but the early prints run the other way and a glut is suffered, not captured; the only route is public.
- D1China adds mature-node capacity faster than anyone before: its 28nm share heads from about 22% to about 31% by 2027, and Nexchip's Hefei fab adds 55k wafers a month.
- D2Electric cars, AI datacentre power delivery and industrial automation all need more analog and power chips at the same time.
- R1A glut is suffered rather than captured: a Western newcomer has no domestic-substitution tailwind and cannot win design slots on price alone.
- R2The prints run the other way: onsemi, Infineon, ST and NXP are expanding gross margin, Analog Devices raised list prices 15%, and 8-inch utilisation is near 90%.
- R3Tariffs and sovereignty rules could wall the Chinese glut off from Western buyers entirely.
- C1Nexchip Hefei reaches full 28nm capacity, taking China's 28nm share past 31% and flipping mature-node pricing into oversupply.Q2 2028

What changedthe record, newest first
- 21 Jun 2026The semiconductor story has two halves moving in opposite directions: AI chips in acute shortage, and commodity mature-node analog/power/automotive parts where China is building the capacity for a 2027-2028 glut that would squeeze the big Western chipmakers. Right now that second half is TIGHTENING, not glutting (utilisation is recovering and Chinese foundries are raising prices), so the bear is a forward supply call, currently losing on the early prints. A bear thesis inside a bull market, which is why almost nobody underwrites it.
