Timing and PNT
As the physical world fills with autonomous systems that must act together, the scarce bottlenecking input is precise, GPS-denied, trustworthy time and position (chip-scale atomic/optical clocks, PNT resilience), not compute

The callJamming broke the GPS assumption for 40% of European flights, but the first response is procedures and multi-constellation receivers, not a binding rule; early.
- D1GNSS interference hit about 40% of European air traffic in 2026, and quartz oscillators and GPS receivers cannot hold accurate time or position once jammed or spoofed.
- D2Quartz displacement is proven: SiTime replaced quartz parts with MEMS timing and is worth about $18.4B.
- R1The resilience guidance is guidance: no binding rule exists, and Europe's aviation plan only starts a rulemaking task that usually takes 3-5 years.
- R2The fast-growing slices are either small, MEMS timing from a $0.3B base, or bought through defence programmes that go to primes.
- R3In datacentres Meta showed sub-microsecond sync in software, which caps the per-server clock idea, and Microchip, Teledyne and SiTime own the incumbent positions.
- C1EASA or the IMO makes GNSS-resilient timing a binding carriage requirement, turning resilient clocks into a volume component.2029

What changedthe record, newest first
- 16 Jul 2026Sized the precision-timing market properly this week. The interesting structure: the fast slice is small, the big slice is defence procurement, and the loudest new demand story (AI datacentres needing perfect time) has a quiet bear, the biggest operators already solve it in software on ordinary servers. Meanwhile GPS jamming went from incident to epidemic in eighteen months, and regulators are moving; that, not the datacentre, is the datable driver here.
