QKD

The physics works and China built a national quantum network, but Western security agencies tell every buyer QKD most wants not to buy it.

The callThe bear case wins by a wide margin: NSA, NCSC, BSI, ANSSI and the Dutch agency steer governments, defence and banks to post-quantum cryptography, and the listed names are absorbing what is left. The market goes from $100M to $230M on programme money alone.

Fig. 1The balance. Drivers and catalysts against restraints, each block sized by its weight; catalysts hang dashed because they have not happened yet, sized by their odds. It tips toward the restraints.
  1. D1A state that wants links secure against any maths assumption builds a quantum network as infrastructure, as China did across 4,600 km and by satellite to Stellenbosch.
  2. D2Repeater and memory money arrived in Q2 2026, which could remove the trusted nodes that make today's QKD a weak point.
  3. R1The NSA does not anticipate certifying any QKD product, the US DoD bans it, and the UK plans full post-quantum migration by 2035 with QKD outside the path.
  4. R2The layer is being absorbed into listed names: IonQ took control of ID Quantique, Toshiba folded QKD into an ML-KEM stack.
  5. C1A major Western security agency endorses QKD for a specific use, which would reverse the buyers' guidance; nothing dated points to it beyond ANSSI's 2027 certification milestones.2027

  1. 1Through end-2027 national security agencies (NSA / NCSC / BSI / ANSSI) keep steering buyers to PQC over QKD in published guidance AND no pure-play QKD-hardware company raises at >=$500M valuation; either breaking is the re-open trigger.Dec 2027 · open
  2. 2The agencies still steer to post-quantum cryptography and no QKD hardware company raises at $500M or more.Dec 2027 · open
  3. 3ANSSI certification milestones; any major agency endorsing QKD for a named use would change the view.Dec 2027 · open
  4. 4Standalone QKD does not become a venture-scale category by 2030: no pure-play QKD-hardware company reaches a >$1B independent outcome, because national security agencies continue to recommend PQC over QKD and the addressable buyers follow that guidance.Dec 2030 · open
  5. 5No QKD company reaches a $1B independent outcome; the repeater money of Q2 2026 is what keeps the 2030s on watch.Dec 2030 · open
