Mid-IR photonic sensing

Mid-IR photonic sensing wins gas analysis and breath diagnostics by 2028

The callMid-IR sensing stays specialty until a laser-on-silicon module gets under $100, and nobody can date that; if value moves, it goes to the integrated chip sensor, and discrete parts stay with the incumbents.

Fig. 1The balance. Drivers and catalysts against restraints, each block sized by its weight; catalysts hang dashed because they have not happened yet, sized by their odds. It tips toward the restraints.
  1. D1EU methane rules with compliance dates force every import site to measure, creating regulated demand for quantification-grade sensing.
  2. D2Quantum cascade lasers and uncooled detectors on a silicon photonic chip could do what NDIR cannot: fingerprint several molecules at once without drift.
  3. R1Laser-on-silicon integration is still comparing material platforms, so the sub-$100 module has no date and the slice stays a lab-box market.
  4. R2Methane rules buy open-path lasers and cameras, not point sensors on a chip, and NDIR incumbents add cheap multi-channel detection to keep 70%+ of volume.
  5. R3Daylight Solutions to Leonardo DRS for $150M in 2017 is the category's exit ceiling so far.
  6. C1A Commission delegated act requiring site-level speciated methane measurement, so every import site buys quantification-grade lasers.2030
