Grid electrification
The grid + electrical-equipment buildout, the biggest AI-infrastructure opportunity
- Closing
The call, a draftThe AI build-out is the biggest electricity-demand shock in decades, and the money goes to the equipment makers with sold-out factories. The window is late: the leaders have re-rated, and new transformer capacity in 2027 puts a date on the scarcity.
- D1Grid capex roughly doubles to $600-800B a year by 2030 on IEA and BNEF figures.
- D2Power-transformer lead times average about 128 weeks, generator step-up units about 144, with prices up 77-95% since 2019.
- D3GE Vernova booked more datacentre electrification orders in Q1 2026 than in all of 2025, and Eaton's datacentre orders rose about 240%.
- D4Europe's €176B datacentre build from 2026 to 2031 is limited by grid readiness, according to EUDCA.
- R1Hitachi's $1B-plus US transformer expansion and new Eaton and Siemens capacity arrive in 2027, and lead times have plateaued.
- R2GE Vernova trades at roughly 47-70x forward earnings and Vertiv at 44-75x, pricing flawless execution.
- R3Line-rating firms win multi-vendor utility frameworks on raises under $50M, so the time-to-power layer earns procurement margins.
- C1Power-transformer lead times stay above two years at the end of 2027.31 Dec 2027
- C2TS Conductor raises $100M or more, or discloses $100M of annual revenue.30 Jun 2027
- C3Prysmian or Nexans acquires a dynamic line rating, advanced conductor or grid-enhancing company.31 Dec 2027

What changedthe record, newest first
- 4 Jul 2026The grid buildout keeps splitting into 2 different investments: the scarcity trade in conventional kit (transformers at 128-week lead times, but new capacity lands 2027, so it has an expiry date) and the technology bets that route around the queue, where the money so far flows as utility procurement contracts rather than startup equity. The exception worth watching is solid-state transformers, which get their own write-up.
- 30 Jun 2026The AI build-out is now an energy story with a chip input. The durable money is in the picks-and-shovels of electrons — transformers (lead times out to ~128 weeks), grid kit, and the software orchestrating multi-source power — and Europe's €176B build is gated by the grid, not by capital.
