2D materials

Two-dimensional materials (graphene, hBN, MoS2, WSe2) reach high-volume manufacturing in at least one semiconductor or photonic application by 2028 (most likely thermal management films, EMI shielding, or UV LED substrates).

The callRestraints win today: 2D materials have been 5 years from volume for 15, and the value goes to the device makers, not the material. Early, not open.

  1. D1Silicon channels below about 10nm lose mobility, so the roadmap swaps in atom-thin 2D semiconductors for stacked transistors in the 2040s.
  2. D2AI packages run too hot for copper and organic pastes, and a 2D layer carries heat sideways, so thermal films are the first volume use.
  3. R1Contact resistance, CVD variability and transfer contamination are unsolved, so no 2D product has reached a million units a year.
  4. R2The material earns little: the process spreads through Aixtron's reactors and the margin sits with the device maker and the thermal-material primes.
  5. R3Graphene thermal films can lose to CNT and synthetic diamond, and UV LED on graphene to AlN templates.
