The call, a draftElectric air taxis are close to certification, and paid passenger volume still looks set to stay small this decade, under 10,000 flights in 2030. The window is late: Joby, Archer and Beta hold the field and run their own operations.

  1. D1Joby cleared FAA Stage 4 in March 2026 and is flight-testing with FAA pilots, with a type certificate expected around late 2026 or early 2027.
  2. D2Joby and Archer both plan UAE launches in 2026, with a Dubai vertiport network under the RTA.
  3. D3Archer agreed in August 2026 to buy Boeing's Wisk, Insitu and SkyGrid, with Boeing taking just under 20% of Archer and Insitu bringing over $200M of defence-drone revenue.
  4. R1A separate air-carrier certificate is needed after the type certificate before any paid service starts.
  5. R2Vertiport build-out, battery energy density and the number of aircraft flying lag certification by years, which keeps per-flight economics weak.
  6. R3Lilium failed and Volocopter retreated to ultralights after its rescue, leaving three funded makers that burn hundreds of millions a year.
  7. R4Joby's Stage 4 testing was 15% complete on 1 May 2026, and slips have been the pattern.

  9. C2An eVTOL maker passes 1,000 cumulative paid commercial passenger flights.31 Dec 2027

What changedthe record, newest first
  • 23 Jun 2026The eVTOL certification clock finally moved: one US maker is now a single FAA stage from a passenger type certificate, which puts real pressure on the bet that paid air-taxi service stays a rounding error through 2027.
