Functional safety silicon for robotics
Every scaling robot needs a functional-safety system that forces a safe state when the AI behaves unpredictably or the operator link drops.

The callRobot safety stays a commodity lockstep chip under certified software, so the money goes to middleware and integrated drives, and the chip earns little.
- D1Humanoids and mobile robots are leaving the cage to work next to people, and nobody can yet prove a neural policy on a GPU safe.
- D2ISO 25785-1 for legged and humanoid robots arrives late 2026 to 2027, making a certified safety island mandatory for industrial sales.
- R1Robot makers already build safety from off-the-shelf lockstep chips under certified software; the chip is a commodity.
- R2NVIDIA shipped Halos with 43 partners and IGX-Thor closes the Jetson safety gap, taking the middleware and drive lane too.
- R3ASIL-D certification takes 4 years and several million dollars, which protects Infineon, NXP, ST, TI and Renesas; no independent safety-silicon startups exist.
- C1ISO 25785-1 published, making a certified safety island mandatory in every humanoid sold into industry, mostly to the benefit of software and certification.2027

What changedthe record, newest first
- 22 Oct 2026A Mercedes-backed safety-chiplet start-up could not raise a productisation round within a year of spinning out.
- 20 Jul 2026Checked whether safety certification is an opening or a wall for a new chip company. It is a wall. The reason safety matters so much to car buyers is exactly the reason a newcomer cannot get in: the certification is a multi-year, independently-audited programme, so being a must-have protects the handful of firms that already passed it.
- 22 Jun 2026NVIDIA just put out a full safety system for robots (chip, software, and a certification lab), not only a safer chip. That confirms the read that the safety layer is being filled by the big platform owner, and it even crowds the software-company route a little.

- 13 Jun 2026Every robot will need a safety system, but it is not a new chip. The market already builds it from off-the-shelf safety microcontrollers plus certified software, NVIDIA is adding a safety island to its own robot computer, and the most expensive thing anyone bought in this space recently was software (NXP paid EUR 625m for safety middleware). A great European company can be built here, just not a silicon one.
