Optical neural networks perform the linear algebra of inference by letting light interfere, diffract or scatter through engineered media, and after two decades of small-scale demonstrations they now work well enough for MNIST-class and sensing tasks, while depth, nonlinearity and reconfigurability remain unresolved.
Summary
An optical neural network (ONN) encodes a neural network’s weights into an optical structure and its activations into light, so that matrix-vector multiplication happens as a side effect of propagation rather than as a sequence of clocked digital multiply-accumulates. Three hardware families dominate the literature. Programmable photonic integrated circuits build the matrix from interferometer meshes or directional-coupler stages on silicon; free-space diffractive networks stack phase masks so that propagation between planes performs the fan-out; and volumetric or scattering media compress the interconnect into a monolithic block of engineered disorder. A recent example of the last family packs a classifier into ~3.8×10⁻⁴ mm³ at a claimed record neuron density of 1.0×10⁹ per mm³, reaching 94.8% blind-test MNIST accuracy and 1 μm effective resolution as an optical compressed imager.
The linear part of an ONN has never been the problem. Three parameters decide whether the technology matters. Component scaling: conventional Mach-Zehnder meshes need O(N²) active phase shifters, which caps matrix size; a multiport-directional-coupler architecture has been demonstrated that covers the N-dimensional unitary group with 3N phase shifters and realises an N×N matrix-vector product with 7N, breaking that scaling. Nonlinearity: optical materials have weak intrinsic nonlinearity, so most working systems fall back on electronics between layers, paying conversion energy and latency. Routes around this include multiple scattering through repeated data-embedding planes, which synthesises linear and nonlinear transforms concurrently at milliwatt CW power using only linear components; foundry-made optical-electrical-optical converters that pair a germanium photodetector with a micro-ring modulator to give a reconfigurable nonlinear transfer function with on-chip RF gain above unity; and saturable quantum emitters embedded in inverse-designed nanophotonics, proposed to operate at nW/μm², seven orders of magnitude below the nonlinearity threshold of conventional materials.
Depth and noise: analogue optics accumulates amplified spontaneous emission and insertion loss with every layer. A semiconductor-optical-amplifier neuron using cross-gain modulation was modelled to show genuine noise compression: because M weighted WDM inputs are compressed onto one amplified output wavelength, when the input OSNR is below about 19 dB the output OSNR is higher than the input, so noise does not simply accumulate to death across cascaded layers 2022 Shi Soa Aonn Noise Depth Scaling. Where physical depth cannot be increased, architecture can substitute for it: a sequential reasoning framework decomposes a task into coarse-to-fine steps executed by a single diffractive layer with dynamic operator selection, reaching 94% accuracy on 100-class optical fibre speckle classification at a reported system energy efficiency of 23.3 TOPS/W.
Viability (3/5)
The evidence for basic function is solid and physical, not simulated. A volumetric scattering classifier fabricated by two-photon nanolithography achieved 94.8% blind-test MNIST accuracy and average FSIM of 0.93 as an imager. A single-layer diffractive ONN classified 100 classes of fibre speckle at 94% accuracy under a time-sequenced inference scheme. The enabling components are also maturing: monolithic, foundry-fabricated silicon OEO converters show reconfigurable nonlinear transfer and RF gain above unity at ~1-10 mW bias, with open eye diagrams to 4 Gb/s, and a graphene-silicon slot-waveguide microring modulator delivers VπL of 220 V μm with over 70 GHz bandwidth and 50 Gbit/s operation in a 10 μm active length.
What is not yet demonstrated is the thing that would make ONNs a general compute platform: many cascaded nonlinear layers operating all-optically at useful width. The depth result that matters most is an emulation with a noise recursion rather than a fabricated multi-layer chip; one neuron was built and depth was inferred by feeding measured output OSNR back as input OSNR 2022 Shi Soa Aonn Noise Depth Scaling. The strongest nonlinearity proposals are numerical: the quantum-emitter architecture is trained and evaluated in simulation with physics-aware training, as is the atom-cavity quantum ONN on MNIST and SAT-6. Score 3 reflects working devices on small tasks with the scaling question open.
TLDR: Real hardware, real accuracy, but only on small benchmarks and with depth still supplied by architecture or electronics.
Drivers (3/5)
On the demand side, the sources are unanimous in motivation and silent on evidence. Papers open by citing unsustainable power consumption from scaling deep networks and the energy and latency overheads imposed by the physical separation of memory and computation. None of the supplied sources contains a market size, a customer, a procurement decision or a comparison against a named electronic accelerator, so the demand driver is asserted rather than demonstrated here.
Supply-side drivers are better evidenced. Silicon photonics foundry access is real enough that a nonlinear OEO primitive has been fabricated in a commercial process. Three-dimensional integration is being built to relieve planar routing limits, with hybrid air-clad and polymer-clad waveguides showing 0.25 dB per mode-transition interface, Euler bends down to 10 μm radius at 0.4-0.5 dB, and adiabatic splitters at 0.6 dB over 52 μm, explicitly targeting ONNs among its applications. Materials work aimed at nonvolatile, low-loss, multi-level phase control is at the perspective stage for ferroionic 2D systems, framed as a back-end integration strategy rather than a demonstrated device.
TLDR: Demand is stated identically by every source (AI energy and latency) but never quantified; supply-side enablement is genuinely improving.
Novelty (4/5)
Measured against earlier ONNs, the recent advances are substantive and quantified. Against MZI meshes with O(N²) active components, the multiport-directional-coupler unitary converter needs 3N phase shifters for uniform coverage of the N-dimensional unitary group and 7N for an N×N matrix-vector product. Against discretely spaced diffractive layers with stringent alignment requirements, the volumetric scattering network folds the interconnect into a monolithic near-field medium at 1.0×10⁹ neurons per mm³. Against conventional optical nonlinear materials, the saturable quantum-emitter activation is claimed to operate seven orders of magnitude lower in intensity. Against the assumption that ASE accumulates fatally with depth, the XGM wavelength-converting neuron compresses input noise so that output OSNR exceeds input OSNR below roughly 19 dB input OSNR 2022 Shi Soa Aonn Noise Depth Scaling. Achieving nonlinearity with fundamentally linear components at milliwatt CW power is a conceptual advance in its own right.
The limit of this claim must be stated plainly: the supplied sources compare ONN architectures with other ONN architectures. Only one system-level efficiency figure appears, 23.3 TOPS/W, and no source in this set benchmarks an ONN against a digital accelerator on the same task. The quantum-optical branch does report an algorithmic advantage over parameter-matched electronic baselines, a 4.4× sample-efficiency improvement and 74.0% higher best 100-episode return on LunarLanderContinuous-v3, but that is a learning-efficiency claim, not a throughput or energy claim.
TLDR: Several genuine step changes against prior optical art; no head-to-head against digital electronics in these sources.
Diffusion (2/5)
Every adoption obstacle visible in these sources is still open. Free-space diffractive systems carry stringent alignment requirements, which is precisely the motivation for the volumetric alternative, but that alternative is written by two-photon nanolithography and inverse design, so its weights are fixed at fabrication. Programmable systems avoid that but pay in active components and drive electronics; the search for nonvolatile, multi-level, low-loss phase control is at the materials-perspective stage. Where nonlinearity is optical, it is either simulated or requires SOA gain blocks characterised at 10 Gbit/s OOK with −17.5 dBm per channel 2022 Shi Soa Aonn Noise Depth Scaling.
There is one useful signal on what productisation looks like in analogue optics generally, from an adjacent field: a full-stack analogue optical quantum computing platform with one hundred inputs, a 100 MHz clock, a cloud interface and an open-source Python SDK. That is the shape an ONN would need to take to be usable by non-photonicists, and no ONN source here reports anything equivalent. Score 2: early evidence of manufacturable primitives, no evidence of a route to users.
TLDR: The sources describe device physics, not deployment; fabrication, reconfigurability and software stacks are all barriers they name but do not solve.
Impact (4/5)
The clearest value in these sources is not general AI compute but computation placed inside the optical path, where the alternative is digitising and moving data. A diffractive ONN with photon counting is shown to saturate the Nagaoka-Hayashi Cramer-Rao bound for multiparameter estimation and to recover fine features at the quantum limit, outperforming direct imaging, with superresolution microscopy, telescopy and remote sensing named as targets. A quantum ONN is proposed for real-time satellite sensing specifically to cut communication bandwidth to ground stations. All-optical interactive sensing with a human-machine interface has been demonstrated at 23.3 TOPS/W system efficiency. These are real, bounded, high-value niches where an ONN does something an electronic pipeline cannot.
The larger claim, replacing or offloading transformer inference, is present only as forward-looking analysis: the nonlinearity-limited optical power for large language models is estimated to scale sublinearly with model size. That estimate is interesting and unverified. Score 4 rests on the sensing and imaging case being demonstrated, not on the datacentre case.
TLDR: Large where latency and energy at the sensor are the binding constraint; the datacentre-inference prize remains an estimate.
Timing Soon (2-5yr)
The near-term band is set by the demonstrations that already exist in hardware: a fabricated volumetric classifier and compressed imager, a working single-layer diffractive system doing real-time all-optical sensing, and foundry-fabricated nonlinear activation primitives on silicon. Applications where the ONN is the front end of a camera, spectrometer, fibre sensor or telescope have a plausible 2-5 year path because they need shallow networks, tolerate fixed weights and are compared against digitise-then-process pipelines rather than against GPUs.
Deep, wide, reconfigurable all-optical inference sits further out and is gated by items that are currently emulations, perspectives or simulations: multi-layer cascades validated in silicon rather than by OSNR recursion 2022 Shi Soa Aonn Noise Depth Scaling, nonvolatile multi-level phase materials, and quantum-emitter or atom-cavity activations moving from numerics to devices. The sources give no basis for dating that transition.
TLDR: Sensor-side and imaging front ends are close; general-purpose optical inference is not on the horizon these sources describe.
Overrated or underrated? Fairly rated
Split the field in two and the picture is consistent. As a replacement for digital AI accelerators, ONNs are overrated relative to what these sources show: the flagship task results are MNIST at 94.8% and 100-class speckle at 94%, depth is achieved by time-sequencing a single layer or by architectural substitution, the strongest depth evidence is an emulation 2022 Shi Soa Aonn Noise Depth Scaling, and the strongest nonlinearity results are numerical. Nothing here supports a transformer-scale claim.
As optical pre-processing embedded in a sensor or instrument, ONNs are underrated. The quantum-limited imaging result is the sharpest case: an architecture that provably saturates a multiparameter estimation bound and beats direct imaging is a capability advantage, not merely an efficiency one. Combined with a genuine scaling breakthrough in component count, 7N phase shifters for an N×N matrix product against O(N²), and foundry-compatible nonlinear primitives, the near-term engineering path is more credible than the field’s general reputation suggests. Net: fairly rated, for the wrong reasons on both sides.
Prediction
By the end of 2029, published all-optical neural network hardware will still report task benchmarks at the scale of MNIST or ~100-class classification rather than any transformer-scale workload, and the first commercially sold ONN products will be imaging or sensing front ends rather than general inference accelerators.
